Conduits & Fittings
Montreal, QC
Exhibition Date: Feb 22nd - July 12th 2014
In Conduits & Fittings existing objects found on the walls of the gallery space at CIRCA Exhibition Centre are replicated to scale in stone and are repositioned within the overlooked area of the front entrance. In this work electrical utility boxes equipped with their receptacles and faceplates attached to BX cable are remade into finely crafted replications in Italian Alabaster and are installed along the baseboards of the front entrance/reception space of the gallery in two locations. The replicated objects become inconspicuous and seemingly invisible as they are expected and familiar visual elements in the space.
Replicated objects include:
• 2 - Utility Boxes
• Approx. 110 inches – BX Cable
• 2 - Utility Cover or Faceplates
• 12 -1 Hole Straps
• 2 - Receptacles
In Conduits and Fittings what is usually ignored is now what is on display, carved in Alabaster and mounted on the wall. In this work the functionality of the electrical system is erased through their structural mimicry and material subversion causing the replicated objects to exist purely on a visual level. In this way the everyday electrical objects merge with our preconceptions of the art object, creating a dialogue grounded in the ornamental and decorative.
